GMC and the US Military: A Journey Through History

GMC’s history in military vehicle production is closely tied to its legacy as a manufacturer of rugged and dependable trucks. • World War I: GMC’s involvement in military vehicle production dates back to World War I, during which it produced trucks and ambulances for the U.S. Army. These vehicles were critical for transporting troops and supplies to the front lines.
• World War II: During World War II, GMC played a significant role in the war effort by producing a variety of military vehicles. One of its most iconic contributions was the GMC CCKW, commonly known as the “Deuce and a Half.” This 2.5-ton 6×6 truck was used for troop and cargo transport, becoming a symbol of the war’s logistics.
• The GMC CCKW (Deuce and a Half): The GMC CCKW was one of the most widely used military trucks of World War II. It came in various configurations and was employed for various purposes, including as a cargo truck, troop carrier, and artillery prime mover.
• The GMC DUKW (Duck): The GMC DUKW, also known as the “Duck,” was an amphibious truck used in various theaters during World War II. Its ability to operate on both land and water made it invaluable for beach landings and transporting supplies in challenging environments.
• Post-World War II: Following World War II, GMC continued to supply the U.S. military with trucks and vehicles for various applications. These included cargo trucks, personnel carriers, and specialized vehicles for different military branches.
• Korean War and Beyond: GMC’s military trucks, such as the M211 and M135 series, were used during the Korean War and continued to serve the military into the early years of the Vietnam War. These trucks were praised for their ruggedness and versatility.
